This antique 15ct gold bookchain collar necklace, dated 1867, features bold rectangular book links and polished ball connectors—a rare and iconic example of Victorian design. It measures 17.75 inches in length, 8mm wide, and 4.5mm thick, fastening with a 12.5mm charm holder clasp, perfect for suspending a pendant or fob.
Stamped “15ct” on one end link, the necklace has been professionally tested using an XRF analyser. Most elements read as approximately 19ct gold, with the clasp testing at 17ct, and a small historic repair area—grey in tone—testing at 13.78ct gold with traces of silver, copper, and palladium. The grey colour results from zinc rising to the surface during soldering, but is discreet when worn against the skin. The elevated gold readings suggest the piece is likely closer to 17ct, with a possible 24ct gold gilt layer over a solid gold base. This would have aligned with 19th-century assay standards, where anything between 15ct and 18ct could be marked 15ct.
There are two soldered links that do not move as freely due to old repairs, though this is not noticeable when worn. Small repair marks are also present between some ball links, but these do not impact the piece’s appearance or articulation. Minor dings can be seen on a few book links under close inspection, with only one slightly visible on an end link when worn.
The necklace also bears a registered design lozenge, with a reference table included in the photos. The markings on this chain are believed to indicate:
I: Material (metal)
22: Day
D: September
t: 1867
15: Parcel number

A striking and wearable piece of authentic Victorian jewellery, rich in history and craftsmanship.
