An absolutely gorgeous Victorian 15ct gold chain necklace, dating to circa 1880, featuring two wonderfully ornate Etruscan Revival barrel stations, beautiful rich golden tones and the added versatility of two wearable lengths.
The chain features lovely rounded oval links punctuated by two magnificent elongated, double-ended gold barrel stations, each measuring approximately 33mm in length. These beautifully detailed stations are adorned with intricate applied gold beadwork, decorative scrolling motifs and granulation-style detailing, inspired by the ancient goldsmithing techniques that became so fashionable during the Victorian archaeological revival.
Crafted in 15ct gold with a high-carat gold wash, the necklace has a particularly beautiful, rich yellow gold finish. The surface gold has been tested using XRF analysis, with readings closer to 18ct gold in several areas. The chain retains its original 15c gold fineness stamp alongside a maker's mark on the end link, both somewhat softened by age.
Another wonderful feature of this piece is its adjustable length. It can be worn at its full 25.5 inches or shortened to approximately 22.15 inches, giving two different looks. Finished with a fabulous 19mm swivel dog clip.
With its exceptional decorative details, gorgeous patina and substantial visual presence, this is a particularly special example of Victorian Etruscan Revival jewellery. Equally beautiful worn alone or styled with a treasured pendant.
